If you haven’t heard of Shankar Mahadevan by name, there is a good chance you have probably hummed one of his songs under your breath. His songs and compositions are some of the most famous in Indian popular music. A Bollywood musical hero, Shankar started out his career working at a big software company.

Though he always loved music, he wasn’t sure if he could make a living from it. Thankfully for us, his friends and family insisted he try. Today, he’s one of India’s best-known composers and producers.

But his contributions don’t stop there! Shankar firmly believes in the importance of Indian music and that we should place more value on our culture and traditions. He says, “Music can be used as a tool to teach many things”. With that in mind, he and a friend started the Shankar Mahadevan Academy in 2011.

The academy teaches many different types of music courses like Hindustani vocal and Carnatic vocal. It also has classes on Hindi movie songs and devotional songs. These classes are conducted online with tutors who teach students from all over the world. The academy has also created Online Music books or OM books. These books have all the songs required, references, and come with a video help students practice. They even have a special kind of recorder that allows you to send your song to the teacher for feedback.
